 What is Alzheimer's disease?

Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia. It is a progressive disease that begins with mild memory loss and an inability to communicate and respond to the environment. Alzheimer's disease affects the areas of the brain that control thinking, memory and language.

Dementia and Alzheimer's disease

The terms "dementia" and "Alzheimer's disease" are sometimes used. However, the two concepts are not the same.  Alzheimer's disease is a type of dementia.

Dementia is a general term for memory-related symptoms such as forgetfulness and confusion. Dementia includes specific conditions that cause these symptoms, such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and traumatic brain injury.

The exact cause of Alzheimer's disease is unknown. But at a basic level, the breakdown of brain protein disrupts the functioning of brain cells (neurons) and leads to the disruption of biological events. Neurons are damaged, lose connections with each other and eventually die.

Researchers believe that Alzheimer's disease in most people is caused by a combination of genetics, lifestyle and environment that affect the brain over time.

Beta-amyloid is part of a larger protein. Accumulation of these fragments is toxic to neurons and disrupts communication between cells. These substances form large deposits called amyloid plaques, which also contain other cellular debris.
Tau protein plays a complex role in supporting and transporting nerve cells in the body, transporting nutrients and other essential products. In Alzheimer's disease, the tau protein changes shape and forms neurofibrillary tangles. Disrupts synapse transmission and is toxic to cells.
Symptoms and signs of the disease:
Forgetfulness is one of the main symptoms of Alzheimer's disease. The first symptoms are that you may not remember recent events or conversations. As the disease progresses, memory deteriorates and other symptoms appear.
